A e-waste recycling exprerience from the backstage
Last time, I went to volunteer in a
e-waste event organized by the Lower East Side Ecology Center- made
possible by the most prominent volunteering programme in NY: New York
Cares. From 1pm to 3pm, we were 4 volunteers helping out the 5 or 6
very nice workers of the organization in the Upper West Side. Despite
that day was very cold and snowy and the lack of informative signs
about the event, many people participated and good mood and warmth
were dominating our crew. As we were in front of the YMCA, people
could see what we were doing and we could enjoy free coffee at the
YMCA whenever we wanted.
We were settled along the pavement with
some big containers. As far as I can remember there were 3 and people
could drop their computer(s), hard drive(s), monitor(s), and many
other things! The participants were either coming on foot, by car,
and bicycle. Everyone seemed to have got prepared for taking good
riddance of their electronic devices in a earth-friendly way.
The NYCares volunteers, we were at a
table for having people filled in a short survey and dealing out
information about the orgnization, the next events, or tax beneficial
form. That was nice! People were very grateful to us and as far as
I'm concerned their great mood and thanks made me feel good,
encouraged to pursue such actions in the future.
At the end, we got maybe 12 tones of
devices.
