According to the Daily Beast Website, Manhattan is 7 degrees hotter than the suburban areas. The authors of the article (please find the article via the link below) suggest that if the rooftops were more grassy, the "heat island effect" could be reduced by 2 degrees in the summer time.
Then it is relevant to retrieve the fact that 1% of the greenhouse gases in the USA is emitted by NYC! Here the authors suggest that the yards could be turned into gardens and explain that "Manhattan's dense cityscape provides long periods of heavy shade, perfect for spinach, broccoli, and brussels sprouts."
I've noticed that there were green efforts among some communities. In fact, there are cute little community gardens spread sporadically throughout Manhattan. That must encouraged! Bloomberg, I think NYC is awaiting your words of encouragement!

Have you ever wondered HOW all the electronics are recycled?
Although I'm very keen on green issues, I've never consciously wondered how that was all recycled. This coming Sunday though, I'm going to volunteer in a electronic recycling event that will take place in the Upper West Side, NY. So I'll keep you updated!

Today I just discovered two websites which promote bicycling. Throughout the US for the first one: http://momentumplanet.com/about.html
and throughout NYC for the second one:
http://www.velojoy.com/
An acquaintance of mine is a regular bike rider in NYC and is a contributor to this latter website. I believe this is a good source of inspiration for women to bicycle while looking elegant, feminine, smart...
I tried to ride a bike in NYC as well. My experience has turned out not very good for the bike was stolen right away. As a product of the countryside in the middle of France, I was not used to tying up my bike so cautiously and riding with so many cars around me. Although this experience was very short (5 days), it was very intense. I recommend to everyone who is responsible- willing a healthy and environmental friendly lifestyle.
